We’re engineers and scientists, which means we take good practice seriously. We like rules, logic and we love games. (You’ll see that from day one – new hires are automatically enrolled into lunchtime games of Killer Pool and our, er, comprehensive set of rules!)
Dogs are welcome in the office, though unfortunately we’re all violently allergic to egos, so please don’t bring one of them in.

Always-on learning and development

In the data industry, we believe if you stop learning even for a moment, you’ve fallen behind. That’s why we invest a lot of time in perfecting our career ladder, in setting ambitious personal development objectives, and in encouraging our people to stay curious.
It’s also why everyone at Optima gets half a day each week to dedicate to learning, away from client deadlines and free to explore new technologies, new perspectives, and ideas that interest them. All we ask is that from time to time they share what they’ve learned – or built – with the rest of the team.
Exams aren’t for everyone, and so we don’t force our people to complete technology certifications. We do, however, have a training budget for everyone. This means if you want to gain an accreditation in Azure, Sitecore, GCP, Snowflake or any other relevant technology or methodology, the answer will almost always be ‘of course’ (no pun intended!).

Where we are

We’re based in Edinburgh’s city centre, a minute or two’s walk from Haymarket Station. Features include excellent public transport links, ample car parking and plenty of choice for lunch.
Our office is a bit special too. Category B Listed, it was built in the late 17th century as a farmhouse for the farm that served Edinburgh Castle. These days the farm is long gone and the building has - thankfully - been modernised with technology front-of-mind. Period features abound, however, and there’s reputed to be a tunnel that still runs between our office and Edinburgh Castle, though we can’t claim to have actually seen it!
